The Woking Pancake Race 2008

The Woking Pancake Race, organised by Woking Shopmobilty, took place in the town centre on Tuesday 5th February 2008. Teams came from organisations across the town including Woking Borough Council, The Peacocks Security Guards, Wolsey Place and Debenhams. The mayor opened the event and the races got underway with a large crowd watching

The mascot race was run first, with entries including the Woking News and Mail News Hound and Snow White from the Ambassadors Theatre, then it was on to the "serious" races! With a record number of teams entering several heats were run, hosted by one of the DJs from Eagle Radio and under the watchful eye of the race marshals. The runners had strict instructions to flip the pancake 3 times on each leg, and if they dropped the pancakes they must go back and pick it up.

Several teams dressed up in costumes including a team of Smurfs, pirates from St John the Baptist, some running beer & champagne bottles and even a team of Accountants trying to hide (we think they were trying to be ghosts!) A crowd were cheering the teams on, with all ages taking part. Horsell Lodge and Moorcroft Day Centre entered teams including one gentleman in his wheelchair!

The event was run by Woking Shopmobility; a local voluntary organisation which run a scheme to help those with a mobility problem get around Woking Town Centre. They run a shuttle around the town and also have wheelchairs available for loan.
