Woking Books

Below is a selection of books about Woking and Surrey:

Around Woking
'Around Woking' draws around 200 varied photographic images of the town, during the inter-war years, from 'Past Images' (WOKING), an archive of over 10,000 glass plates that have been amassed by the author over a thirty year period. The majority of images were from the camera of photographer, Sidney Francis, who worked in the district from the early 1920s to the late 1950s. Some important images are contained within the collection of visitors to the town, period transport, Brookwood Cemetery, shop fronts, visitors to the Mosque, Sports teams of the day and period wedding and portrait work. PAST IMAGES can provide copies on request.
'Around Woking' has an e-mail address for further contact and provides both a glimpse into the archive for the reader and supportive information for students of Woking's history. The book looks at images primarily but has a historical synopsis that runs throughout.
The night after a shooting star is seen streaking through the sky from Mars, a cylinder is discovered on Horsell Common in London. At first, naive locals approach the cylinder armed just with a white flag only to be quickly killed by an all-destroying heat-ray, as terrifying tentacled invaders emerge. Soon the whole of human civilisation is under threat, as powerful Martians build gigantic killing machines, destroy all in their path with black gas and burning rays, and feast on the warm blood of trapped, still-living human prey. The forces of the Earth, however, may prove harder to beat than they at first appear.
